Starting the Young Horse

Starting horses is our specialty! As a horse matures from foal to adolescence it gradually increases its capability for learning and its level of understanding. Similar to the way in which we learn. So you can expect varying degrees of results depending on the horses age. We recommend if your colt/filly is 5-6 months you should have him/her weaned, halter broke, taught to lead, tie, be brushed all over and be able to pick up and work with their legs. This is the beginning.

At 1-2 years, your horse should be taught to accept a bit, lunge, drive. There should also be a brush up on the basic beginning steps.

Depending on the breed and what you intend to use your horse for, the "Starting" of the horse begins at 2-5 years. This always includes: a quiet mount, walk, trot, lope, stop, back, circle, and to be able to walk freely away without the use of a wall. If the beginning steps are done correctly, you should be riding very soon. All horses are different, so results may vary, but usually an experienced rider is able to ride comfortably in 1-4 months.
