Off-Horse Classes

Now you can become an expert on horses, tack, and equestrian safety while you learn how to stop those riding aches and pains. Best of all, classes are offered all year round - even in winter!

What are "off-horse" classes?

Affordable workshops that are designed to boost your horse know-how while keeping you in shape for the upcoming riding season.

Phase I Classes are for anyone over the age of 16. We'll demystify horse behavior, explain how to choose and buy tack, clothing, and gear, and team up with local aerobics, martial arts, and isometrics experts to teach you some easy equestrian fitness routines.

Horsing Around Classes are for families with children, and are offered through the Rathdrum Department of Recreation.

All off-horse classes are about equine fun, fitness, and friendship. In the long gray months of winter you'll get a nice dose of horse-happiness. There's no better way to connect with other horse lovers in your area.

Phase I Classes - The Mason Foundation Method: From the Ground Up

For anyone over the age of 16 who loves horses. You don't have to know how to ride, or even own a horse, to attend.

Offered at the Athol Community Center and Diamond Barb's Saddlery in Sandpoint. $50 for 8 weeks. Classes are 2 hours long, and include 30 minutes of physical fitness.

In these 8 weekly classes you'll learn:

  • How horses think, feel, and communicate - so you can tell them what you want, and understand what they're trying to tell you.
  • How to keep your horse healthy and happy, and minimize vet & farrier expenses.
  • How to choose, buy, and care for tack so it gives you a lifetime of enjoyment without costing you an arm and a leg.
  • A basic "horsemanship fitness routine," so you can keep those riding aches and pains to a minimum (don't worry - ANYONE can do these exercises - they're fun)!
  • How to make every ride as safe and enjoyable as possible - for you AND your horse.
  • How to get the right fit and the best deals when you shop for a helmet, boots, jacket, breeches, and other equestrian clothing and gear.
  • And MUCH more!
