About the Mason Foundation Method

Mental, physical, and emotional training for a lifetime of horse enjoyment!

The Mason Foundation Method combines three generations of practical horse wisdom with modern advances in equine understanding.

Grandma Millie and a friend getting ready for a training session.

Through the Mason Foundation Method you become not just a rider of horses, but a horseman or horsewoman with...

  • A thorough understanding of horses - how they learn, and why they do what they do.
  • A gentle confidence when working on your horse's training or behavioral problems.
  • A secure, balanced seat no matter what type of riding you do.
  • A positive, upbeat attitude towards improving your riding skills - for fun or show.
  • A strong bond with your horse, where you work and play together as partners, not adversaries.

The Mason Foundation Method helps you acquire the timeless, compassionate skills of true horsemanship. Skills like...

  • Physical balance, coordination, and elegance
  • Emotional maturity and a calm manner when dealing with horses
  • Light and subtle hands, legs, and cues
  • The ability to logically think through training problems
  • The joy of equine athleticism and the fun of riding in the natural world
You too can develop the confidence and balance this rider has - while having just as much fun!

Real horse education - not gimmicks or fads!

The Mason Foundation Method is a refinement of the teaching and training principles of my Grandma Millie. Her work combined riding, training, and off-horse "lessons" in which she taught me to understand the horse's perspective. This isn't some vague "horse whisperer" mysticism, but a "knowledge base" that has helped me develop my training skills to a high art.

When you get inside your horse's mind, you'll soon develop a partnership with your horse. He won't think of you as an enemy. Instead, you'll become his trusted leader - whether you're riding in the wilderness, with your friends and family, or in the show ring.

Developing the complete horse and the complete rider

The Mason Foundation Method has three educational components:

  • Equine Knowledge Base (understanding the physical & mental aspects of the horse)
  • Equestrian Athleticism (rider fitness, balance, coordination, and time in the saddle)
  • Rider Skillsets (riding disciplines, safety, equipment, gear, tack, etc.)

All these components are part of all our teachings. Whether you attend Mason Foundation Method classes, workshops, clinics, demonstrations, groundwork training, off-horse classes, or riding lessons, like Grandma Millie, I never skimp on the foundation!

Finally, many people have been riding all their lives, without really KNOWING or UNDERSTANDING their horse. So we offer a free email newsletter, "Over The Fence," to all of you who want to learn more about horses.
